SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

All science programs at New School Preparatory are inquiry based and follow the standards and position statement of the National Science Teachers Association (www.nsta.org) and the National Science Education Standards as abstracted [here].

Grade Six Science
SCI-0601
This inquiry-based course integrates case studies in biogeography, physics, astronomy, chemistry, geology, biology, biomechanics, and related topics with a hands-on experiential program of study. Basic skills and scientific principles are emphasized, as are the global aspects of science and their relevance to real-world situations. Students are encouraged to question the world and to use scientific tools to refine their knowledge.

Grade Seven Science
SCI-0701
This inquiry-based course integrates case studies in biogeography, physics, astronomy, chemistry, geology, biology, biomechanics, and related topics with a hands-on experiential program of study. Basic skills and scientific principles are emphasized, as are the global aspects of science and their relevance to real-world situations. Students are encouraged to apply their skills to problems and challenges and to expand their knowledge.

Grade Eight Science
SCI-0801
This inquiry-based course integrates case studies in biogeography, physics, astronomy, chemistry, geology, biology, biomechanics, and related topics with a hands-on experiential program of study. Basic skills and scientific principles are emphasized, as are the global aspects of science and their relevance to real-world situations. Students are introduced to increasingly complex problems and are encouraged to find solutions through critical thinking and positive action. Basic concepts, skills, and principles are identified and isolated from more complex case studies as a review for the high-school bound student.

Grade Six Computer Science
TEC-0601

Students learn about search engines and the evaluation of web sites to facilitate research skills. They are introduced to desktop publishing, computer art, spreadsheets, presentations, and word processing. The students are also exposed to networking, programming, and script writing.

Grade Seven Computer Science
TEC-0701
Grade Seven students review spreadsheet software and become adept at creating a variety of graphs from spreadsheet data. They learn how to create a personal database and master many features in word processing, web design, and computer graphics. Python programming is introduced.

Grade Eight Computer Science
TEC-0801
Students demonstrate proficiency in communication skills by utilizing desktop publishing, multimedia, and web design software. The students must demonstrate the ability to automate tasks via script writing and programming.
